UNIMED, Mediterranean Universities Union, founded in the early 90s, is an Association of 80 Universities from 21 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean basin. UNIMED’s main aim is to develop scientific and educational cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region, in order to contribute to the process of integration between the two Mediterranean shores. UNIMED collaborates with its network universities in several activities in different fields including among others tangible and intangible cultural heritage, economics, energy, environment, management of water resources, transports, health, media, new technologies, history, agriculture, tourism and others. The image that represents our association better is that of a University Without Walls. UNIMED carries out the following activities in favour of the associated Universities:

  • Promotion of the international dimension of universities.
  • Planning and fund raising activities: information on call for proposals and opportunities offered by European and International organizations; partnerships research; technical assistance; planning; dissemination.
  • Support to mobility of students, researchers and academics in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
  • Technical assistance in the development of quality assurance in higher education.
  • Organization of national and international conferences, workshops, seminars and round tables.
  • Training of academic and administrative staff of universities, with particular focus to the staff of the international relations offices.

UNIMED has sub-networks focused on specific fields, such as the sub-network on Transports, Logistics and Multimodality, the sub-network on Renewable energies and Environment, on Intangible Cultural Heritage and on Tourism in the Mediterranean. Purpose of the sub-networks is to bring together research centres, university departments, faculties, academics and researchers that work in the selected fields in order to favour scientific cooperation, the exchange of experience and information, the strengthening of existing partnerships and the establishment of new collaborations. The aim is to support economic and social cohesion in the Euro-Mediterranean region, in order to promote on the one side cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation and, on the other side, local sustainable development.

Silvia Marchionne

has a degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Studies at the L'Orientale University of Naples (2009) and postgraduated in International Cooperation and Development (2011). She is Communication and Networking Officer Assistant (Arabic, English and French speaking), helping in networking and relations with UNIMED associated universities, mainly with universities of Middle East and North Africa region, assisting in dissemination and communication activities, management activities related to the website, organization of conferences and seminars. Research activities and analysis for Euro-Mediterranean projects and programs on international cooperation, assisting in partner search for projects and initiatives.

Paola Romano

Currently on maternity leave.

has a degree in Political Sciences and post-graduated in International Affairs (1998). She is Project Executive Manager, specialized in project design and financial management of UNIMED international projects. Responsible for Research and dissemination of international Programmes, drafting and management of projects (English and French), developing, implementing and monitoring the projects’ implementation plan. Tutorship and staff activities’ coordination within the framework of UNIMED’s TEMPUS MEDA and INTERREG III B Medocc projects. Involved in networking activities, partner search for projects and initiatives. Organisation of meetings and conferences.

Marcello Scalisi

is the Executive Director of UNIMED since October 2008 until nowadays, where he works as Project Manager for European, national and regional funded initiatives and for the technical assistance activities for the UNIMED university network. He is also Coordinator of technical assistance activities for all of the 80 universities associated to UNIMED’s network. Head of projects funded for research and training activities. Head of the research and training Division (since 2000). Responsible of overall management of technical and financial activities at UNIMED; Coordinator of the web portal “MedArabNews”.

Carmen Torres Gomez de Villar

has master’s degrees in Translation and Interpreting as well as in European Policies and Institutions from Spain (Granada) and Switzerland (Geneva). She also finished a Master in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid at the National Distance Education University. Since June 2014 she is working at UNIMED in the field of “International projects and networking”. Her previous employments led her to UNICA, the University of Rome Tor Vergata and LUISS Business School. She also was doing translations as a freelancer.
